EUCALYPTUS
Latin name: Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus is an evergreen tree that is regarded as the highest plant in the world.
The eucalyptus originates from Australia and Tasmania: there the tree is known as ‘the diamond of the forest‘, ‘the tree of life‘ and ‘the miracle tree‘.
In recent years eucalyptus has become increasingly popular, thanks to its valuable ethereal oil, which is fatal to many microbes. Eucalyptus oil has a strong and aromatic odour, and its taste is spicy and bitter. Eucalyptus oil has a disinfectant effect. Eucalyptus oil contains eucalyptol (cineol), which has a strong antimicrobial effect on certain micro-organisms. The disinfectant quality of Eucalyptus oil is 3 times as strong as that of carbolic acid, but it‘s still less toxic. Preparations on a basis of Eucalyptus oil have a painkilling, antiseptic and anti-parasitic effect.
PEPPERMINT
Latin name: Mentha piperita
Botanical name: Peppermint
Other names: Brandy Mint, Balm Mint, Cold Mint, Green Mint
Peppermint is rich in vitamins and micro-elements. Ethereal oil, flavonoids, tannic acid and bitter essence are the active basic constituents of this plant. The most important component of the ethereal oil is menthol (up to 60%). In addition, peppermint contains many organic acids, zinc, selenium and molybdenum. Modern science has established that menthol, which contains mint oil, stimulates the receptors on the skin or the mucous membrane with a cold feeling. Surface blood vessels are narrowed, the blood vessels of the internal organs dilate, and then a light, local anaesthetic effect arises. Mint oil has strong antiseptic qualities. If the mint oil comes into contact with the nerve endings in the mucous membrane in the stomach or the abdominal organs, then the peristalsis is strengthened.
Since the ancient times, medical practitioners have rightly considered mint a useful remedy for certain stomach complaints. The absorbed mint preparations strengthen the secretion of the digestive glands, accelerate the emptying of the stomach and the organs and slow down the fermentation process and decomposition in the organs. Peppermint also has a general fortifying quality.
